Sustainable Event Design: Creating Impact Beyond the Moment

As event designers, we don’t just create beautiful spaces—we want to shape experiences, influence perceptions, and, most importantly, leave a mark long after the last guest has departed. That’s why sustainability in event design isn’t just a trend for us; it’s a responsibility.

With Global Recycling Day on March 18, and the Brisbane Sustainability Festival at the end of May, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we, as an industry, can push the boundaries of sustainable event design. Brandition have always been passionate about proving that luxury and sustainability can—and should—go hand in hand.

The Shift Toward Sustainable Design

The demand for sustainability in events is building in strength. I can see that our clients and brands are prioritising eco-conscious choices, from hiring furniture and asking us what recyclable materials and carbon-neutral production processes we have.

But sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste—it’s about rethinking how we design spaces from what materials we use in our warehouse to products we build from and hire – how many times will we will repair an item before it is replaced – do our products have a long lifespan and a smaller environmental impact?

To be honest, in the early days when we focused on sustainable event design, I really had to think hard about how not to compromise but how to innovate.  Now we are always looking for new ways to elevate the event while minimising our footprint. And it is easy. That means making smart design choices, working with like-minded suppliers, and ensuring that sustainability is built into everything we create.

How We Design for Sustainability

So now, sustainability isn’t an afterthought—it’s at the heart of our approach.  It is cost effective, eco-friendly and still breathtaking!

Reuse, Repurpose, Rent

Instead of single-use builds, we create modular designs that can be adapted, repurposed, and reused across multiple events. By prioritising hire over custom-built one-offs, we extend the life of our designs while reducing material waste.

Recycled & Sustainable Materials

We actively choose sustainable materials, from FSC-certified timber to natural fabrics and low-impact paints. Where possible, we source locally to minimise transport emissions.

Waste-Conscious Styling

Every decorative element we use is selected with end-of-life impact in mind. Can it be reused? Recycled? Composted? These are questions we ask when sourcing materials.

Partnering with Green Innovators

We collaborate with like-minded suppliers who share our vision for a circular economy in event production. Whether it’s décor with a multi-use life, biodegradable floral installations, or sustainable packaging, we’re always looking for ways to set these standards.

Sustainability in Action: Our Favourite Green Event Practices

Some of the most exciting sustainable design choices we’ve made have come from events that challenge us to be both creative and conscious. Here are a few practices I love:

Furniture & Decor with a Second Life

Our hire collection is designed to stay in circulation, reducing the demand for new production and landfill waste. We also work with brands to repurpose elements post-event, whether donating or selling them or reintegrating them into new designs.

Mindful Logistics & Carbon Offsetting

Transport emissions play a huge role in event impact. We consolidate deliveries to balance out our footprint and pack those trucks tightly to minimise the number of wheels on the road.

What Can We All Do?

Special days such as Global Recycling Day and events like the Brisbane Sustainability Festival is a reminder that sustainability is a collective effort. Whether you’re an event professional, a brand, or a guest at an event, there are simple actions we can all take to support more responsible events:

  • Choose rental over single-use décor.
  • Ask suppliers about their sustainability credentials.
  • Opt for digital over printed materials where possible.
  • Support venues and vendors that prioritise eco-conscious practices.

Every small change adds up. If we all make mindful choices, we can redefine what sustainable events look like—not just on paper, but in real, tangible impact.

Final Thoughts: The Future of Sustainable Events

Sustainability in event design isn’t optional—it’s an expectation. And as we mark special days and host festival that focus on these important issues, we’re reminded that the choices we make today will shape the legacy we leave tomorrow.

We have a really good team, they are committed to designing with purpose—creating events that inspire, connect, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

We’d love to hear about the events you are involved in and how they are making a difference.
