Top 5 Dinner Party Styling Tips to Impress Without the Stress

By Nicola Briggs, Managing Director Brandition

As an event stylist, I’m often asked how to bring that wow-factor to a dinner party without going overboard. Whether it’s a backyard birthday or an intimate long-table celebration, styling doesn’t have to mean stress—or spending big. With the right approach, you can create a setting that’s not only beautiful, but also deeply personal and easy to pull off at home.

Here are my top five tips for effortless dinner party styling, inspired by Queensland’s vibrant seasons and my favourite DIY ideas.

1. Start with the Season

In Queensland, we’re lucky to have stunning natural backdrops and rich seasonal colour palettes year-round. Whether it’s deep greens and native florals in winter, or citrus tones and tropical textures in summer, let the season guide your styling choices. Use local greenery, fruits, or florals that are in abundance—it’s sustainable, budget-friendly and always looks fresh.

Tip: In summer, I love layering table settings with linen napkins in sand tones, complemented by fruit, think fresh Queensland favourites. In autumn, I’ll go for eucalyptus, rustic candles, and terracotta accents.

2. Pick One Styling Hero

It’s tempting to want to do it all—chargers, runners, multiple florals—but trust me, one styling ‘hero’ can speak volumes. Whether it’s a bold centrepiece, a beautiful napkin fold, or even just statement glassware, choosing one key element to highlight will keep your table looking intentional, not overdone.

Tip: A single trailing garland down the centre of the table with native foliage and tea light candles works wonders and looks impressive with very little effort.

3. Use What You’ve Got

You don’t need a warehouse full of props to style a beautiful table. Some of the best styling I’ve seen has come from people getting creative with what’s already in their home. Jars become vases, scarves turn into table runners, fruit bowls double as centrepieces.

DIY styling is about being resourceful and telling a story through the things you already love.

Tip: Group odd-numbered candle holders or glass bottles together for an eclectic look, or use old cookbooks stacked beneath platters for an elevated serving station.

4. Set the Mood With Lighting

Lighting changes everything. Natural light at a sunset dinner, or the flicker of candles under the stars—both create magic. Avoid harsh overhead lighting and opt for soft, warm tones. Solar lights, tea lights in jars, or string lights woven through foliage all add that golden glow guests remember.

Tip: Dim the house lights and let the candles do the work. Even mismatched jars with tea lights inside look curated when used consistently across a table.

5. Don’t Forget the Personal Touch

The most memorable dinner parties I’ve styled weren’t the most extravagant—they were the most personal. Handwritten name tags, a welcome cocktail with a story, or even a playlist with meaning can make guests feel truly special.

Tip: I like to leave a little note at each place setting with the menu or a favourite quote. It doesn’t have to be fancy—it just has to feel thoughtful.

Final Thoughts

Styling a dinner party is about creating an atmosphere that feels warm, welcoming, and true to your personality. With a little creativity and some Queensland inspiration, you can turn even a humble table into something worth celebrating.
